Chapter 12. 6:00 PM After Work Downtime: Mike and Chad Hash It Out

6:01: Chad Loosens Up

Mike and Chad are standing in the reception area all packed up and ready to go—coats on and valises in hand. They're both throwing out ideas about the best place to have an after-work drink, when Mike's controller Ellen walks up. She's also heading out the door on her way home.

"Wow, this looks like a heavy discussion," she jokes.

"Why, yes, Ellen; trying to maximize ambiance while imbibing is important," Mike says.

"Well, I'm sure you'll figure it out when you get thirsty enough," she says, nodding at Chad. She reaches for the office door.

"Hey, Ellen, one quick question, if you don't mind," Mike says. He has a very straight face.

"Yes, Mike . . . of course." She squares up to look at both of them. This is going to take a minute. She obviously doesn't mind.

"Well, I just wanted to know, what happens 'when a problem comes along'?"

Chad has no idea what Mike is talking about.

"Oh, Mike, for gosh sakes, you really aren't working very hard are you?" Ellen questions. "Well, 'when a problem comes along, you must whip it.'"

"Whip it?" Mike asks, smiling.

"Yes, Mike, whip it good. I have to go now," Ellen is still in character.

"Yeah, Mike, let her go home, before the cream sits out too long," Chad blurts out. He surprises himself—and them. He can't believe he just joined in their little lyrics game.
