A character archetype is a commonly used, well known or expected character design. Archetypes are a little like templates and are useful in design, mainly due to the fact that artists often have a limited time to present a character, and they want to communicate as much about them and what to expect from them as possible. The better we can do this, the less work the viewer has to do to become fully engaged.
