No matter what you want to draw, it all starts with shapes. Hands are a great example. The classic art student refrain is “I can’t draw hands.” Personally, I have never started a good drawing of a hand by trying to draw, a hand. No, instead I start by drawing the quadrilaterals and rectangles which compose it.
As you begin to learn how to draw you need to set more reasonable goals for yourself than drawing “hands.” Shapes that are simpler are geometric shapes. These most simple of shapes are easiest to master. They are also the easiest to use to judge spatial relationships and the relative size and position of compositional elements, or proportions.
