Sparrow

This delicate sparrow on a pussy willow branch was finished in more detail but begun with the same simple shapes as before. Notice that the block-in lines are loose and only lightly structured. This will keep your drawing from looking stiff and artificial.

Start with an oval; then block in the basic shapes, as shown in steps A and B. When you’re comfortable with your outline, start shading in the form of the bird with a soft lead pencil as in step C. To finish the drawing, study the example, and make delicate strokes that follow the direction in which the feathers grow. Apply more pressure on the pencil for the darker areas, and leave the lightest areas white. Try using the side of the lead or a dry brush and India ink for the soft shadows ...
