This delicate sparrow on a pussy willow branch was finished in more detail but begun with the same simple shapes as before. Notice that the block-in lines are loose and only lightly structured. This will keep your drawing from looking stiff and artificial.

Start with an oval; then block in the basic shapes, as shown in steps A and B. When you’re comfortable with your outline, start shading in the form of the bird with a soft lead pencil as in step C. To finish the drawing, study the example, and make delicate strokes that follow the direction in which the feathers grow.
