Inking with Brush & Pen

Birds with dramatic plumage make good subjects for inking. They have interesting outlines for silhouettes, and their feathers can be depicted in bold patterns of black and white. Look for interesting pictures of birds in books and magazines, and try inking them with pen or brush.

A lettering pen is a good tool for applying India ink to a drawing. These types of pens can be found at most art and stationery stores. In the examples here, a pen was used for refining the pencil drawing, and a brush was used to fill in the outline.

Use short, quick strokes of the pen to create the rough outline of this rooster.
