AT THE AGE OF THIRTY, I CHANGED CAREERS and started working as an assistant graphic designer in a field I loved: publishing. My favorite part of the job was working with the artists and illustrators. Eventually I got up the nerve to take a drawing class. My boss encouraged me to skip Beginning Drawing and take Figure Drawing instead. “If you can draw the figure, you can draw anything,” she said. I took her advice and fell in love with drawing.
If we are to draw things we like, then it’s very likely that our drawings will include people. There are few things more compelling than the human face, or more beautiful than the human figure.
