Manipulating digital photographs with various software can illustrate a range of ideas, making it possible to reinterpret the environment as it exists, adjusting or sharpening the view.

As well as undertaking a sketching survey of a city or site, a photographic survey can also be useful. When photographing a city, similar techniques can be used to those applied when sketching it. A journey may be described; there may be a study of distant views and then close-up views of materials or surfaces. The photographs could be sequenced to tell a story about an experience, how a part of the city has been interpreted. There may be a study of shadow, light, material, or form.
