Painting and collage

Some of the earliest visual records of the city are paintings. A painting communicates an understanding that can be momentary, connected to an experience. It may be planned to set a scene of everyday life or it may connect to an idea of a place. It involves interpreting atmosphere, color, light, and material. The term “painting” refers to a single image that uses color of any sort on a fixed background to interpret a view of a place. Traditional painting would involve oils and canvas, watercolor and paper; today the media are more varied.
