Here are some more examples of excellent silhouette patterns. Note that even without the help of the eyes and mouths or other detail, the moods of the characters are instantly evident: pleading, caution, delight, rejection, contemplation, sadness, playfulness, etc.

Lines define all the moods, yes, but the essence of each pose lies in the general shapes in alliance with specific shapes, in the positive shapes versus the negative shapes.

All this must be discovered by the animator and rediscovered by the cleanup person.
