OVERVIEW

Our journey through this book is nearing its first rest stop with the end of Stage 1, but before doing so we will examine the core human factors concepts that form the foundation of this book: attention, automaticity and, especially, mental workload. The reader is taken on the scenic route through the literature of the last 50 years as a lead-up to discussing the key problem of mental underload with automation. Mental underload is described as being a particular issue in an automation failure scenario, and several theories are considered as explanations for why that might be the case.
