Since the introduction of adaptive cruise control (ACC), the current generation of automated driving systems has offered the potential to relieve drivers of mental as well as physical workload. Previous research, though, has raised some puzzling conflicts about the effects of ACC on driver mental workload (MWL). Some studies have reported reduced MWL with ACC compared to manual driving, whereas others have found no effect.
