Earlier incarnations of Drupal didn't have very good native image and media support. This wasn't a catastrophe because, as you know, it's very easy for the community to plug any gaps by providing modules for everyone to use. The problem is that it led to a wide range of modules being produced that made it harder for new users to know which module was the right one for them.

To make matters worse, each module was created with slightly differing tasks in mind, so not only was there a lot of wasteful overlap in the functionality provided by each module, but also subtle differences that added to the learning curve.
