Otto Focus is the little camera assistant living inside your camcorder, who keeps everything in focus. When he sleeps, a special circuit takes over that analyzes the contrast of the scene. A picture that is in focus has more contrast than when it is out of focus. Check it out with a reflex still camera. Look at a black area next to a white area. As you turn the focus barrel to put the image out of focus, the black area starts looking gray.
