Burning a Disc Image

As of DVDSP 3.0.1 (running on Mac OS X 10.3.5), DVDSP did not support dual-layer media. But it does support burning a dual-layer project to disc. That's exactly the route we'll take. Figure C-7 shows the Build & Format window. Notice that the destination is simply the hard drive and not the dual-layer burner.

The default output format of .img is exactly what we want. That's it; go ahead and burn the disc. You'll be prompted to name the file. We chose rc.img. We'll use that image in Toast 6.

Toast 6 to the rescue

We used a LaCie d2 dual-layer external FireWire drive. It shipped (quite proudly, at that) bundled with Toast 6. You can pick up Toast 6 separately as well. We had to install LaCie's drivers to help OS X recognize the drive for use as a burner with the various iLife products. For the disc itself, we used Verbatim 8.54 dual-layer +R media.

Toast 6 knows all about disc images. To get started we simply dragged our rc.img file onto the Toast application window. Figure C-8 shows the results.

After that, we clicked the Burn button and waited about an hour. Out popped a complete disc. It played fine in all the consumer set-top players and computers we had available.
