When Adobe purchased Macromedia for more than $3 billion dollars, the industry wondered what its motivation was. The jewel of the deal was Macromedia Flash and control of the file format Macromedia had created: the SWF specification. Together they created Acrobat 8 and finally Flash worked perfectly inside a PDF file on the PC. Now, SWF is a worldwide standard for animation inside Web pages, cell phones, and even the Sony Playstation Portable device.
