Performance-based Seismic Design of Structures

14.1 INTRODUCTION

The objective of the performance-based seismic design is to verify the seismic ­performance of the structure and to evaluate its seismic performance for various design limit states. For each limit state, the level of earthquake considered in the design may be determined depending upon the purpose and importance of the structure. The performance-based design (PBD) or performance-based engineering (PBE) is not a new concept. Automobiles, aircrafts and turbines have been designed and manufactured based on this approach for many decades.
