Multi-degree of Freedom Systems
10.1 INTRODUCTION
If the physical properties of a system are such that its motion can be described by a single coordinate and no other motion is possible, then it is a SDOF system and its solution can be obtained using any method discussed so far. If, however, the structure has more than one possible mode of displacement and it is reduced mathematically to a SDOF approximation, the solution of the equation of motion is only an approximation to the true dynamic behaviour. The quality of results obtained with a SDOF model depends on several factors, such as, the spatial distribution of mass and stiffness.
