Because of their dynamic nature, and constant development, e-books attract considerable interest but opinions on them are divided. They have been seen as a promising media, but also as technology that has failed to gain momentum.

Their potential in education and research was recognised early on, yet their adoption by academic libraries did not go as smoothly as the adoption of e-journals.
