Many books on personal finance put the “goal setting” chapter at the very front. The idea is that if you don’t know exactly where you’re going, you’re likely to wind up somewhere else.

True enough. But I think you need to have a clear picture of where you are and get some of the niggling details of your finances resolved before you can take a deep breath and figure out where you want to go next.
