FACILITATING A CROSS-CULTURAL MEETING

There are many things that can go wrong in a meeting. This booklet is intended to deal with many of these things. However, one area that is often overlooked—maybe because it is considered too sensitive—is communicating across language differences in a meeting. Since most business meetings are conducted in English, the issue becomes how to use the language in a way that facilitates clear communication rather than serve as a barrier. While we understand that cultural communication involves other things such as nonverbal cues (e.g., eye contact, space) and protocol (speaking directly to a superior), the focus of this tool is solely on language in the context of a meeting.
