Understanding organizational context

No individual exists in isolation. Each person, each player, operates in a context, and for most people in business, that context is the organization. In chapter 11, I will put forward the notion that to be effective as either a manager—and indeed a coach—it is not sufficient to simply help the individual player become more effective—you must also ensure that the increase in effectiveness contributes to the achievement of the organization’s goals.

Clearly, a large part of this is achieved through the coaching itself. (‘Tell me, how will this course of action contribute to the organization achieving its goals?’) But I am also suggesting that the capacity of the manager or coach to understand ...
