In the previous editions of this book, I referred to ‘non-directive coaching’ and described my approach in those terms. Many people—both managers and coaches—have adopted a non-directive approach and it is understood by many organizations that use coaching to be a core concept.

The term ‘non-directive’ is most closely associated with Carl Rogers, an American psychologist who was deeply involved in the humanistic movement. Interestingly, the words were later dropped and replaced by ‘client-centred’ or ‘person-centred’. ‘Non-directive’ is taken to mean that the coach does not direct the player—that is to say, he does not tell, advise, or suggest.
