INTRODUCTION
In this chapter the common feature which links the motors is
that they are all, in one way or another, a.c. motors. In terms
of market share none of them compares with the induction
motor, but some of the drive schemes which we look at show
great promise, and are likely to become more important in
the future. The idea of using synchronous or reluctance
machines in controlled drives is not new, but until power
electronic converters became available it was not practicable
