2.1 Introduction

All electrical machines use magnetic materials for directing and shaping the magnetic field, which acts as a medium for energy conversion. While most of the rotating machines use ferromagnetic materials along with air, the transformer uses ferromagnetic materials only as the medium. The magnetic circuit acts as a medium for conversion of electrical to electrical energy in case of transformers, electrical to mechanical energy in case of motors and mechanical to electrical energy in case of generators.
