The cell voltage of aqueous electrochemical power sources is limited to be
within 1.229 V, the thermodynamic stability window of water. This cell volt-
age is signicantly lower than the values of cells operating in organic electro-
lytes. For an aqueous electrode with a half-cell reaction that is pH sensitive,
it is possible to have a higher cell voltage by coupling the positive electrode
in acid with the negative electrode in an alkaline electrolyte. The electrolytes
