13.4. Power/Ground Network Design

Now, we shall turn our attention to the analysis and synthesis of power/ground (P/G) networks. In particular, we focus on the main design challenge highlighted in Section 13.2, namely, IR and L · di/dt power supply noise. Some techniques to suppress power supply noise, such as wire sizing, also mitigate the electromigration effects. We follow a similar organization as in the preceding section on clock network design. First, we describe some typical P/G topologies used in designs. Next, we present a random-walk method for the efficient analysis of P/G networks. Last, we focus on the automated synthesis of P/G networks.
