Biocatalysis is defined as catalysis involving biological catalysts, such as isolated enzymes and living cells. Biocatalysts chemically convert organic compounds with high selectivity. One promising strategy for the construction of efficient whole cell biocatalysts is to display enzymes on the cell surface of microorganisms such as yeasts, fungi, and bacteria.
