10.1 Advanced Wireless Sensor Networks

WSN have shown their potential in various application domains like military monitoring, health, industrial control, weather monitoring, commodity tracking, home control, cognitive sensing and spectrum management, security management, etc. Few of the recent advances in this technology are as sensor devices localization, designing smart home/smart office environments, supporting several military operations, advancement in several industrial or commercial processes, traffic monitoring, and management at expressways or highways healthcare monitoring, etc.

Smart environments at homes or offices provides control to the owner of their homes or of their work places by automating different systems like controlling lightning systems, controlling window blinds, electrical appliances in kitchens, or security system. WSN technology helps in managing combat operations efficiently. Sensing technology can be used to detect the movement of intruder units on land or sea side. With the tremendous rise in the technological advances in wireless technology, sensor nodes are also playing important roles in industrial applications in terms of efficient supervisory control, optimizing product’s quality improvement, and data acquisition.
