The University of Pune has introduced a paper titled ‘Emerging Physics’ in its syllabus for the first year B.Sc. students from the academic year 2008–2009. The major objectives of the paper include (i) familiarising students with major milestones in the history and philosophy of science in general and physics in particular, (ii) helping students in understanding the conceptual development of the subject from time to time, (iii) providing them a glimpse of future directions and frontiers of the subject. Thereby, they can be convinced about the enjoyable challenges and enormous employment potential that the subject possesses by way of its applications—at present and in the near future.
