Abstract
This chapter explores data privacy in the digital era. It examines legal and ethical challenges arising from technological advancements and data-driven processes. Fundamental data privacy principles are discussed such as the right to privacy, consent, and confidentiality. The chapter analyses the impact of legal frameworks, focusing on the GDPR and similar laws, on businesses and individuals. Ethical concerns about personal data collection, algorithmic biases, and emerging technologies, like AI and IoT, are addressed. The intricate balance between data privacy and national security is explored highlighting tensions between individual rights and public safety. In conclusion, the chapter emphasizes the significance of robust legal frameworks and ethical guidelines for safeguarding data privacy while promoting responsible data handling practices.
