Chapter 15. Persistence

EMF includes a powerful framework for model persistence. Out of the box, it supports XML serialization via a highly customizable resource implementation. Specialized versions are also provided to support the XML Metadata Interchange (XMI) 2.0 standard, which is used as the canonical representation of Ecore, and to serialize Ecore as Essential MOF (EMOF), facilitating interoperability with various modeling tools.

However, EMF does not require that persistence be XML-based or even stream based. The framework provides an API that is flexible enough to support any kind of storage, and even to persist objects across different kinds of storage, with references among them.
