Preface

Let me begin with a confession—I am emotionally challenged. I do care what people think and I would very much like it if you approved of this book. I can be sensitive and defensive at times and I struggle with criticism. I get nervous before I make a public presentation, which is a regular part of my work, and I sometimes feel afraid when I face new challenges. I enjoy approval, I need to feel accepted and loved, and I can feel angry when I believe that I’ve been treated unfairly. I have experienced jealousy, anxiety, irritability, longing, desire, pride, boredom, shame, laziness, worry, embarrassment, and feeling overwhelmed. I’ve also felt enthusiastic, calm, hopeful, vibrant, inspired, courageous, happy and even a sense of love.… ...
