“Can I ask you a question?”

A common question I am asked by caregivers of kids showing an inclination towards building, creating, or problem solving is, “How do I support my child who loves STEM?” This question is typically followed by personal comments that take the child out of the center and replace it with the nostalgic adult, such as:

  • I was never good at math/science.
  • I always hated math.
  • My science teacher in fifth grade was awful.
  • And so on, and so on.

I quickly let them know that it is important to change that language so that it doesn’t discourage their children. Contrary to popular beliefs, kids do in fact listen to the adults in their lives. ...
