Pragmatic pedagogical approaches

Abstract:

This chapter offers practical advice to faculty who plan to include research projects in their work with first-year students. After briefly discussing constructivist learning theory and Blooms Taxonomy of Educational Outcomes, the author suggests using an Information Literacy Taxonomy as a framework for developing increasingly complex library competencies among novice researchers. Additionally, the value of student-based, active learning is described and a number of guidelines for effective assignment design are provided. Finally, this chapter concludes by offering suggestions for moving information literacy beyond the first year.
