Chapter 7Part Numbers

Purpose

  • To define the attributes of the company part number.

Applicability

  • All items and their documents to be released by this CM function.

Policy/Practice

  • The part number will have the following characteristics:
    1. Document number embedded in the part number (avoids cross-references).
    2. Tabulation ability (see below).
    3. Number of digits in length expected to last 50 to 100 years.
    4. Minimum significance (see the article attached).
    5. Compliments a predetermined naming convention (title and description) or class code in order to avoid reinventing the wheel, to find substitutes, etc. (not part of the part number).
    6. On non-interchangeable (part number) changes, only the tab number will change.
  • All part numbers will be eight digits numeric according to the following convention:
  • The dash is shown only for example, not to be used on the document or in the database (avoids unnecessary keystrokes).
  • The tab number is a convention used in the drawing title block and in the database as follows:
    1. If the document does not represent a physical item (document only) then use … “00”
    2. If the document is tabulated (variations of nearly identical items) use …….. “XX”
    3. The first part delineated on the document will always (tabulated or not) be….. “01”
