Magnesium-aluminium-zinc alloys and magnesium-zinc-zirconium are
the main two groups of alloys in general use. Small amounts of other elements
are also present in these alloys. The composition of an alloy depends on
whether it is to be used for casting or working, i.e. as
a
wrought alloy. The cast
alloys can often be heat treated to improve their properties.
A general-purpose wrought alloy has about 93 per cent magnesium-6 per
cent aluminium-1 per cent zinc-0.3 per cent manganese. This alloy can be
