18.8 Selection for wear resistance
Wear
is
the progressive loss of material from surfaces as
a
result of contact with
other surfaces. It can occur as a result of sliding or rolling contact between
surfaces or from the movement of fluids containing particles over surfaces.
Because wear is a surface effect, surface treatments and coatings play an
important role in improving wear resistance. See, for example, section 12.7
and Table 12.5 concerning surface hardening and the wear resistant treat-
ments. Lubrication can be considered to be a way of keeping surfaces apart
and so reducing wear.
