Polypropylene differs from polyethylene only
to the
extent that every
alternate carbon atom
has one of its
hydrogen atoms replaced
by the
methyl
CH
3
group. This replacement
can
take
a
number
of
forms (Figure 4.7). With
the
atactic
form
it is
random
as to
which side
of
the carbon atom
the
hydrogen
atoms
are
replaced, with
the
syndiatactic
form
it
alternates
in a
regular manner
from
one
side
to the
other, while with
the
isotactic
form
all the
atoms replaced
are
on the
same side
of the
carbon chain. Commercial propylene
is
generally
predominantly isotactic with small amounts
of the
other forms present.
