start. The initial crack growth is in a plane which is about 45° to the direction
of the applied stress. This is a consequence of the slip occurring as a result of
shear. After a few grains the direction of the crack changes to be at right-angles
to the applied stress direction. This change in direction is the beginning of
Stage 2.
