When the particles edges are examined more closely in Figure 35, the low level of
crystalline perfection is further substantiated. The maximum, continuous edge widths
are no more than a few hundred nanometres, far less than the several micron observed
in the natural samples.

The complex microstructural development characteristic of this sample is even
more pronounced in the pitch particles, as can be seen from Figure 36.
