In recent years, ‘evidence-informed practice’ has become a mantra for action in higher education. Institutional self-scrutiny, flagged as ‘institutional research’, has for more than half a century been a significant feature of higher education in the United States. Although such activities have existed – often dispersed among a variety of organizational units in institutions in other national systems of higher education (see, in relation to the United States and Europe, Peterson, 2003) – they have only relatively recently become labelled as institutional research.
