Now let us have a closer look into the Wireless Transport Layer Security protocol.
WTLS is based on the IETF SSL/TLS protocol. Within WTLS there are three
different classes.
򐂰 Class 1: Unauthenticated key exchange to establish a session key
(anonymous).
򐂰 Class 2: Enforcing of server-side authentication using PKI certificates similar
to SSL/TLS protocol. The WAP gateway uses a WTLS certificate, which is a
special X.509 certificate optimized for use in a small bandwidth environment.
򐂰 Class 3: If this is implemented on clients, they are able to authenticate using
client-certificates (regular X.509 format).
