Running an enterprise costs money. Depending on upper-level management’s point of view, the Information Technology department is either a valued contributor to the company’s success or a necessary evil. Sales is frequently the golden child of an organization because it is regarded as the “money maker” and “profiteer.” It generates income. Departments such as IT take away from the bottom line. They repeatedly ask for resources—expensive resources—to store data, automate processes, and provide this thing called “security,” which no one ever really sees. IT directors often have to re-justify their budgets when asked, “Didn’t we just give you money for that five years ago?”
