11.3. Configuring the Firewall

Once you have enough information to understand what services you are trying to control by configuring the firewall, you're ready to move on to the nuts and bolts of working with those services and/or the firewall itself. First things first: let's turn the Application Layer Firewall on.

11.3.1. Working with the Firewall in Leopard and Snow Leopard

Out of the box, the firewall in any version of Mac OS X is turned off by default. In Mac OS X client (as opposed to Mac OS X Server) it can be enabled using the Firewall tab of the Security system preferences (see Figure 11-2).
