The Internet runs on a suite of communications protocols commonly known as TCP/IP. This stands for Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol, which were the first two protocols to be defined. Over the years, the suite has expanded to include other protocols, such as User Datagram Protocol (UDP), a stateless Internet Protocol used for streaming media and DNS (the protocol used to connect names with IP addresses and the most popular protocol used on the Internet).
