The advent of Geographic Information Systems has exploded the amount of data people want to collect about Geographic Locations. Whether it is demographic data, such as population or average income, or physical data, such as average annual rainfall, the amount and variety of data to be collected go way beyond anything that could be captured in simple attributes.
