Remember Mariam, the cell phone unit retailer from Kibera, Nairobi, Kenya? Mariam’s business grew out of a desire to help her neighbors.

Twelve years ago, Mariam’s husband, a trucker, came back home with a mobile phone. Mariam had a complaint. One time their first son had been sick, and it had taken two weeks for her to notify her husband. She had no way of keeping in touch with him when he traveled. Her husband figured this device would bring peace to their household.
