Bouncing the light
As a newspaper photographer, I learned to light by bouncing the on-camera flash off of the ceiling. This served its purpose, and it still can on occasion when you don’t have time to do anything else. Besides, cameras have gotten more sophisticated as digital technology has improved. Newer DSLRs read ambient light more easily, so using additional light isn’t as necessary as it often was back in the early days of digital cameras.
Bouncing your flash off a low white ceiling or wall adds overall light in a soft way. You can aim the bounce from a speedlight on-camera or also remotely by placing the remote speedlight off to the side but aimed at a wall or the ceiling.
