14.3.1. Innovative materials development
The development and improvement of thermoelectric materials mainly aims at maximizing the ZT value of thermoelectric materials. Increasing the ZT value can either be achieved by increasing the Seebeck coefficient and/or the electrical conductivity as well as by suppression of the thermal conductivity. These three parameters are all dependent on the carrier concentration of the material, as shown in Figure 14.3. As a function of carrier concentration, the Seebeck coefficient decreases, whereas the electrical and thermal conductivity increases.
