John Alter came for treatment when he was 36 years old, having been referred to me by one of his colleagues, a former patient of mine. He had been in treatment for about a year and a half with a respected analyst prompted by drug abuse and feelings of inadequacy. The analyst contracted with the patient to stop using drugs in return for continued treatment; the patient complied and has always felt that this analyst enabled him to stop his drug abuse.
